Aschoff bodies are microscopic structures found in the heart, specifically the myocardium, and are commonly associated with rheumatic fever. They were first described by Ludwig Aschoff, a German pathologist, in 1904.
Aschoff bodies are nodules composed of immune cells called lymphocytes, plasma cells, and macrophages, surrounded by fibrous tissue. They can range in size from a few cells to large structures, and are typically located in the interstitial tissue between the heart muscle cells.
Although the exact mechanism of formation of Aschoff bodies is not fully understood, it is believed to be due to an abnormal immune response to an infection by group A Streptococcus bacteria. Aschoff bodies can be visualized using histological techniques, and their presence is often used as a diagnostic marker for rheumatic fever. Treatment typically involves antibiotics to eliminate the underlying infection, as well as anti-inflammatory medications to reduce inflammation and prevent further damage to the heart.
